VIETNAMESE MUSIC CONCERT: THE WORKS OF CUNG TIEN
The Vietnamese Culture and Science Association (VCSA) is proud to present a concert featuring the music of Cung Tien, one of the most influential and highly regarded Vietnamese composers.
The purpose of the concert is to celebrate the music of Cung Tien, to broaden the awareness and deepen the understanding of Vietnamese music, and to raise funds for charity programs sponsored by VCSA.
The concert will be held on Sunday, October 27, 2002, 2:00PM-5:00PM at Cullen Performance Hall of the University of Houston, 4800 Calhoun Rd., Houston, Texas 77204. Tickets are $30.00 and $50.00. Ticket sales information is available at www.vhkhvn.org.
Cung Tien’s works will be performed by acclaimed vocalists Le Thu, Bich Lien, Mai Huong, Le Hong Quang, Nguyen Thanh Van, and the Hoai Huong Choir, widely praised pianists Vuong Huong and Bang Lang, and the distinguished Houston Civic Symphony.
Cung Tien’s music has been performed and recorded in Viet Nam, the United States, France, Germany and Australia. Ballad of a Warrior’s Wife, for example, has been presented by the San Jose Symphony Orchestra (CA), the North Orange County Symphony Orchestra (CA), and the Minneapolis Civic Orchestra (MN), among others. The composer has had works commissioned by the Schubert Club of St. Paul (MN) and the Dale Warland Singers; and he has received a grant from the St. Paul Companies (MN) to research Vietnamese folk music and compose an orchestral work using traditional materials. Cung Tien was the Board Director of The American Composers Forum from 1992-1999, and was an artist-in-residence at The Schubert Club of Saint Paul from 1992-1995. In 1993, the Mayor of Houston proclaimed October 2, 1993, “Cung Tien Day”, as part of Houston’s tribute to the composer’s invaluable contribution to Vietnamese music.
The Vietnamese Culture and Science Association is a non-profit organization founded in 1990. It has over 400 members, most of whom are young Vietnamese-American professionals residing in the United States and Canada. Based in Houston, Texas, it has chapters in Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth, Memphis, and San Diego. VCSA’s main goals are to promote harmony and cooperation among Vietnamese-Americans, especially in the fields of culture and science, and to provide a multi-faceted environment where young Vietnamese-American professionals can exchange ideas, share skills and participate in building a strong Vietnamese-American community.
