Camp Report

During the Memorial Holiday Weekend (May 22 – May 25, 98) the Vietnamese-American Youth Leadership Development Camp has been organized by the Vietnamese Culture and Science Association and the Vietnamese-American Student Association at University of Oklahoma State University. The camp was held at Camp Carter YMCA, Fort Worth Texas. There were 180 campers who came from different regions in Texas such as: Houston, Corpus Christi, Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Irving, San Antonio, and from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. There were also campers who came from other states such as Kentucky (Louisville), California (San Jose), Oregon (Portland), Virginia (Falls Church), Florida (Miami), Idaho, etc. Most of these campers are in the age range of 18-30 and most of them are currently actively involved in some community organizations at the city they are living in. Some of these young people are currently the officers of the Vietnamese American Student Organizations at different universities across the Texas region.

This Leadership Camp was made possible thanks to the sponsorship of the following corporations:

Underwriter: AT&T Foundation.
Benefactors: Duke Energy Corporation & Houston Community College System
Patrons: Texas Instruments & Kim Son Restaurant.
Sponsors: United Central Bank, JCPenney and Shells Pacific/Asian Employee Group.
Supporters: Black Dragon Holding Inc.

The camp was organized with a schedule packed of activities including six workshop sessions to discuss about leadership development and the heritage culture and lots of team competition games, toastmaster session to practice public speaking skills and the Big Game to build team work and to add more fun into the learning programs.

The campers from all different regions were divided into ten different teams. Each team was represented by a Vietnamese hero or heroin in the history: Trung’s sisters, Ba Trieu, Tran Binh Trong, Tran Hung Dao, Quang Trung, Nguyen Thai Hoc, Le Loi, Nguyen Trai, Doan Thi Diem and Nguyen Du.

Friday night was reserved for ice-breaking games and the campers had time to explore the camp as well as getting to know each other.

Len Duong camp had the honor to welcome a special guest, Mr. Russell Morgan, a representative from our major Underwriter: AT&T. Mr. Morgan delivered a very good speech on leadership and communication during the Opening Ceremony of the camp early Saturday morning.

Saturday was the day focused on Leadership theme with three workshops discussing about "Volunteerism", "Fund Raising Techniques" and "Public Relation – Advocacy". The keynote speaker, Ms Huong Tran Nguyen, Outstanding Teacher of the Year 1994, has delivered a very inspiring speech on Volunteerism and leadership. Ms. Glenda Joe, the president of Houston’s Asian American Festival Organization, talked about Fund Raising techniques. The campers had the opportunities to practice what she taught right after her speech through the break-out discussion sessions and drill exercises to work on different projects. Dr. Nguyen Dinh Thang, executive director of Boat People SOS, spoke about Public Relation and How to work the media. There was a very interesting discussion on "Honest Politics" concept after his talk and the breakout sessions with work case studies were very helpful to help the campers to learn more about how to promote or advocate for some issues in the mainstream society. The workshops were intertwined with group games and songs to create a fun environment to learn and keep the energy level of the campers high.

Communication is always a very important factor that a good leader has to have. One of the communication skills that a good leader needs to develop is the public speaking skill. The toastmaster session at the beginning of Saturday evening aimed to address this need. The campers were divided into five different breakout sessions to practice the public speaking skills. The topic chosen was "What do you think most important to help you become a good leader?". The sessions were wrapped up by the debate competition among these groups. Following the Toastmaster session was the powwow camp fire with the great performance of Vietnamese traditional music performed by Tran Lang Minh and Nga My, the two famous singers from Virginia.

Sunday was the day focused on Vietnamese heritage culture with the two workshops: "A reflection on Vietnamese Culture" (Mr. Jeff Watkins) and "The values of the Vietnamese heritage and culture" (Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Bao). Mr. Jeff Watkins, director of YMCA International in Houston, Texas, shared with the campers his reflection of the Vietnamese culture in the eyes of an American. His fluent Vietnamese has impressed greatly everyone and made his session one of the most popular session in the camp. Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Bao, the president of the Vietnamese Culture and Science Association, spoke about the Vietnamese culture values that need to be preserved and those values that we need to learn from the America Society. His session was ended with the Poetry Game with lots of fun.

On Sunday afternoon, the teams participated in the Big Game "Huyen Tran Princess" which tested their team work, their knowledge on the leadership skills they learned in the last two days and their ability to overcome the challenge to achieve the goal of the game. The game lasted about two hours and a half and the campers enjoyed it to the fullest.

The last workshop session was the most interesting one "What is a good leadership?" with Mr. Dinh Duc Huu as the guest speaker. Mr. Nguyen has shared with the campers deep insights about what are the most important factors to become a good leader. The questions/answers session has went overtime due to tremendous responses from the youth.

The ten teams of Len Duong camp had the opportunity to showcase their talents and their teamwork during the Camp Fire #2 on Sunday night. These performances were mixed with songs and games which made the event a really memorable one.

On Monday morning the evaluation session was conducted and then the Closing Ceremony occurred at noon. In this ceremony, the best teams in different category was recognized and the campers also had the chance to share their thoughts and comments about the camp. The result was tremendous. There were 56 campers volunteered to get involved with the organizing committee for the camp Len Duong 1999. The camp impact was so wonderful that these young people really wanted to explode it to nationwide and they were willing to help out very early to prepare for the next year Leadership camp.

The result of the camp exceeded the expectation of the Organizing Committee. All of these young and energetic community activists now come back to their home town and started promoting the ideal of volunteerism, the idea of sharpening your skills to be a good leader, and to promote for the Youth Leadership Camp 1999. All of these would not be possible without the great contribution of our sponsors and underwriters. We would like to show our deep appreciation toward these corporations for having made this wonderful event a reality.
